Original Photo - Sharbat Gula - Afghan Girl
National Geographic Editor in Chief William L. Allen calls The Afghan Girl "the most famous picture in our magazine's 114-year history." Photographer Steve McCurry originally took the photograph in 1984 as he was documenting the struggles of Afghanistan refugees at the Nasir Bagh refugee camp in Pakistan. In March 2002, the photograph returned to the cover of the magazine as part of a photo-essay titled "A Life Revealed."

This picture is worlwide known.

I remember back when the first one was taken. Her eyes drew me in. Then I watched when Steve McCurry went back to Afghanistan to see if he could find this girl. And when he did, the eyes were the same but older. They still have the sadness plus more. I remember when he found her and he got permission from her husband to speak with her.

The difference for me seeing these sad eyes again is this time I know what Islam is and the total evilness in it. As I was seeing her eyes again, I was so saddened for her because we know she has endured so much. I remember thinking I wanted to bring her here to the United States and protect her and her children in hopes of them never having to endure anymore abuses.

Thank you for posting this. She still deeply tugs at my heart.
